Spiegel's reporter's answers are a tragic combination of 50 years of thought control and a very real fear of committing a "hate crime" by saying the wrong thing, or god forbid, by not saying enough of the right thing. When Stalin would address the Poliburo his comments would be followed by endless minutes of applause by the membership. No one, it seems, wanted to be spotted by the KGB as the first one to stop clapping. It's the same with the German press; nobody wants to be the first to stop. Excellent post.
