AIDS Increasing in Canada

OTTAWA - The number of people in Canada with HIV/AIDS is now about 58,000 — 0.2 percent of the population — compared with 50,000 in 2002. More than a quarter of them do not know they have been infected, the Public Health Agency of Canada said in a report released Monday.

“The number of Canadians living with HIV infection will likely continue to increase in years to come as new infection rates continue and survival rates improve,” said the Agency’s Dr. Frank Plummer.

Offical estimates place the number of new HIV infections in 2005 at between 2,300 and 4,500–about the same as or slightly higher than in 2002, when approximately 2,100 to 4,000 were infected. The majority of cases, 51 percent, stemmed from male homosexuality.

A University of Toronto study also found a disproportionate rate of HIV infection among recent immigrants of African descent–up to 60 times that of other Canada residents–with as many as 450 new cases of HIV a year.

In some regions their numbers have moved ahead of intravenous drug users. Most represent immigrants arriving with the disease, but up to 45 per cent are getting the virus in Canada. The reasons include promiscious sexual behavior normal among Blacks.

According to a Reuters report, Toronto will host a major international conference on AIDS next month, although Prime Minister Stephen Harper will not be in attendance. Harper plans to reopen a debate on whether to scrap new laws that allow homosexual “marriage” in Canada.

Canada is one of thirteen countries that grants foreign homosexuals political asylum because of fear of “persecution” in their home country on the basis of their sexual behavior. The United States does so also, in accordance with the Immigration Act of 1990, which removed homosexuality as a ground for exclusion from immigration to the U.S.

David Irving continues to suffer imprisonment in Austria because he dared to defend the honor of the German people by speaking the truth. A CBC news article reports “Austrian prosecutors want British historian David Irving to spend more time in prison, saying his three-year sentence for denying the Holocaust is too lenient. Irving could have been sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty on Monday to charges of denying the Holocaust. Under Austrian law, it is a crime to publicly diminish, deny or justify the Holocaust… Irving, who has written close to 30 books, was arrested in November 1989 after he denied in speeches in Austria that the Nazis killed six million Jews. He had contended most of the Jews who died during the war succumbed to diseases such as typhus. Austria’s Justice Ministry says there were 158 convictions between 1999 and 2004.

Why our intuitions about how the world works are often wrong

Thirteen years after the legendary confrontation over the theory of evolution between Bishop Samuel Wilberforce (”Soapy Sam”) and Thomas Henry Huxley (”Darwin’s bulldog”), Wilberforce died in 1873 in an equestrian fall. Huxley quipped to physicist John Tyndall, “For once, reality and his brain came into contact and the result was fatal.”

When it comes to such basic forces as gravity and such fundamental phenomena as falling, our intuitive sense of how the physical world works–our folk physics–is reasonably sound. Thus, we appreciate Huxley’s wry comment and note that even children get the humor of cartoon physics, where, for example, a character running off a cliff does not fall until he realizes that he has left terra firma.

But much of physics is counterintuitive, as is the case in many other disciplines, and before the rise of modern science we had only our folk intuitions to guide us. Folk astronomy, for example, told us that the world is flat, celestial bodies revolve around the earth, and the planets are wandering gods who determine our future. Folk biology intuited an élan vital flowing through all living things, which in their functional design were believed to have been created ex nihilo by an intelligent designer. Folk psychology compelled us to search for the homunculus in the brain–a ghost in the machine–a mind somehow disconnected from the brain. Folk economics caused us to disdain excessive wealth, label usury a sin and mistrust the invisible hand of the market.

BBC Tribe series: female intra-sexual policing re circumcision?

There is a fascinating TV series titled Tribe on BBC TV in England. An English guy, Bruce Parry, with lots of experience of staying for long periods with traditional peoples, stays with various tribes in the Ethiopian Omo valley. What is very apparent is the separation of male and female society.

This is illustrated very well in tonight’s installment, which was with the Dassanech tribe, which practices female circumcision..

Women rule domestically (as usual), and men and women are confined to separate sides of huts. The village most senior woman elder rules female society and insists when interviewed that female circumcision is the most important thing in their culture, and that the culture would be destroyed without it. She explained that not circumcising would mean that the girl and all her family would die. Womanhood (as opposed to girlhood) is associated with the absence of the clitoris. The clitoris, if left in place, is imagined as moving through the body to the head and killing the girl — a striking metaphor for sexual impropriety.

It stuck me that there was no involvement in any way of the men: circumcision is an all-female ceremony, with the cutting performed by a woman elder with the assistance of the girl‘s female relatives. The girl, who had previously been teased by being called ’wild animal’ or ’man’, is thenceforth able to marry.

It seems clear that what is going on here is female intra-sexual policing. Young women denuded of sexual appetite obviously would be much less likely (either by initiation or complicity) to take men away from their wives, thus providing all women of the tribe with greater security against their worst fear: desertion by a husband. No girl will refuse to accept being a part of this set-up because she would not be able to marry — and furthermore would be excluded from the tribe.

Female cicumcision therefore appears to be a female controlled cultural practice to ensure collective avoidance of ‘cheaters’, if you like: female individuals who may ‘let the side down’ in offering or accepting sex without the standard commitment price of the binding promise of support through marriage.

(Of course, if you look at general behaviour and emotion then there are all sorts of ways you can cut across this and appear to show little sex difference, but there is overwhelming research on profound sex difference, and what are sometimes massive brain structural sex differences underlying it.) There may be an answer here to the problem other researchers are currently having in sequencing the Neanderthal genome of relying on greatly denatured DNA in ancient bone samples.

Brizendine, who works at the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute in San Francisco, was listening to a resident run through a new patient’s medical history. A successful, high-functioning working mother had come in complaining of short-term memory loss and persistent anxiety. The resident ticked off the usual details: lab tests were normal, her overall mental health was strong, no family history of early-onset Alzheimer’s. The young doctors around the table looked baffled. Brizendine, who has made a reputation for pinpointing the science behind a woman’s most complicated and bewildering feelings, immediately focused on hormones. “Is she still breast-feeding?” she asked. The resident checked her notes and nodded. “And how’s her sleep? Is her husband supportive?” A typical breast-feeding woman, Brizendine explained, is awash with the hormones oxytocin and prolactin, making her more wakeful, less interested in sex and, sometimes, hyperalert. Could this explain her symptoms?

Vienna, dva - British historian, David Irving, 68, who is serving a three year sentence in the Josefstadt Prison in Vienna, was reported yesterday to have suffered a “moderate to severe” stroke which has incapacitated him. Mr. Irving is now undergoing treatment at a hospital in Vienna, according to prison authorities.

University of Toronto anthropologist David Begun and his European colleagues are re-writing the book on the history of great apes and humans, arguing that most of their evolutionary development took place in Eurasia, not Africa.

In back-to-back issues of the Journal of Human Evolution, Begun and his collaborators describe two fossils, both discovered in Europe. One comes from the oldest relative of all living great apes (orangutans and African apes) and humans; the other is the most complete skull ever found of a close relative of the African apes and humans.

Everything that Mel Gibson said about Jews is accurate: “The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” The Jewish supremacist, terrorist, and mass murdering state of Israel is the cancer of the Middle East. I find it bizarre how the article and seemingly most of the commenters ooooh and aaaah about some alleged words said by Mel Gibson concerning “the Special People” (TM) while he was intoxicated but nobody has anything to say regarding Israel’s latest atrocities against the Palestinians and other long-suffering Arabs. Additionally, take note how Mel Gibson’s grovels in his statement. I’m reminded of the time when Marlon Brando had a few choice things to say about Jews as well:

Mel Gibson has what I’d call “fuck you” money. He’s one of the biggest and richest stars in Hollywood and makes and produces his own movies now and will undoubtedly survive this incident. Let’s remember that the Jews already view him with great suspicion. His father is on record saying in essence that the holocau$t has been wildly exaggerated for financial and political reasons (see here); and he made “The Passion of the Christ” which stayed faithful to the Gospels’ narrative portraying Jews as Christ-killers, i.e. accurately. For this alone the Jews will never forgive him. Hence, I ask: how much worse can things get in Hollywood for Mel Gibson? Not much, I submit.
