James Boswell in his London Diaries, encounters a very old aristocrat and asks him whether, looking back on life, he can discern any pattern or purpose to it. No, says the old boy, it has all been “a chaos of nothing.” Although I’m only in my mid thirties I feel pretty much the same way; and I doubt that in another thirty years I’ll feel any different. I’ve changed schools, jobs, girlfriends, lived in several countries, etc. But looking back on it, I’m surprised at the utter inconsequence, irrelevance of it all. No, the old man’s sentiment doesn’t shock me….Rather, what surprises me is that not everyone feels life’s total futility.

The Celebration of Up Helly Aa, Viking Festival

Up Helly Aa is any of a variety of fire festivals held in Shetland annually in the middle of winter. The festival involves a procession of guizers (or guisers) formed into squads processing through the town or village in a variety of themed costumes.

The first celebration was in 1878, when instead of burning the usual tar-barrel on Auld New Years Eve, a Shetland yoal (a traditional boat) decorated with a dragon’s head and tail was burned. It did not become a regular event until 1889.

There is a main guizer who is dubbed the “Jarl”. There is a committee which you must be part of for fifteen years before you can be a jarl, and only one person is elected onto this committee once a year.

This procession culminates in the torches being thrown into a replica Viking longship or galley. The event happens all over towns in Shetland, but it is only the Lerwick galley which is not sent seaward. Everywhere else, the galley is sent seabound, in an echo of actual Viking sea burials.

After the procession the squads visit local halls (this includes Schools, Sports Facilities and Hotels) where private parties are held. At each hall each squad performs its act, this may be a send-up of a popular TV show or film, a skit on local events, or singing or dancing, usually in flamboyant costume.

Due to the often flamboyant costumes and the large quantity of males dressing up as females, it has earned the joke name ‘Transvestite Tuesday’.

Cioran on “Freedom”

As I’ve already pointed here, I’m reading a very good biography of one of my favourite authors, Cioran; and I came upon the following quotes:

Since time immemorial people have yearned for freedom, and then rejoiced whenever they lost it. And that’s not all. They actively sought, they made desperate efforts to relinquish it. Otherwise, how could we account for the frantic desire to annihilate liberal regimes and the passionate pursuite of dictatorship. Bordedom with freedom is one of the most serious and exasperating points a man can reach….Even under a terrorist regime people feel safer than amid the phantasms of democracy. The reluctance to think and the fear of finding themselves in monadic isolation make people gladly and resignedly accept the imperatives and the commands of dictators. An endless era of infinite freedom, of “sincere” and extreme democracy would mark the invitable downfall of humanity….The crowds want to be ruled.

And here’s another Romanian intellectual, Crainic, making a similar observation:

After all, Adolf Hitler has restored natural order in the field of government. The crowds like to be ruled; the crowds like to be commanded. The system of military hierarchy applied in the organization of the single party — which is one and the same with the nation — reflects the great instinct for subordination and superordination, a fundamental law of social life.

Why minority demands can NEVER be appeased

I was reminded of your article, “How the liberal advance of minorities and women makes society more and more guilty in its own eyes,” while watching the NFL playoffs last weekend, as announcer after announcer touted the fact that with a Chicago or Indianapolis victory the Superbowl would see its first black head coach. In your original example you cease with the election of a female vice-president, naturally leaving the door open to the question of whether things would not finally be “square” once the first female president was elected. Assuming Hillary Clinton becomes the first female president, the answer would be an emphatic “No!” Hillary Clinton owes her entire political career to her husband’s presidency, and feminists would instantly point out that America is no better than those Third World countries (Pakistan, the Philippines, etc.) that nepotistically elect the daughters or wives of prominent male politicians to head-of-state. Things would not be “square” until America elected a female President whose career was independent of any man’s, at which point the bar would again be raised with the demand for a two-term female president, etc.

Similarly, electing Barak Obama would merely raise the question of whether America would ever be ready for an “authentically” black president, meaning one who takes an adversarial stance toward whites, or at least is not too friendly with them as Obama so clearly is. Rumblings along this line are already being heard:

Harris-Lacewell, a Princeton University professor who has followed Obama’s political ascent, said that he may be forced to choose: “You can be elected president as a black person only if you signal at some level that you are independent from black people”—a move she said would be “guaranteed” to make black people angry. “He is going to have to figure out whether there is a way not to alienate and anger a black base that almost by definition is going to be disappointed,” she said. Already, that balancing act is causing some strains. Some of Obama’s longtime black supporters in Illinois are grumbling about the largely white crowd of advisers who now surround Obama as he gears up his national campaign. “Who does he represent? That is what people are worried about,” said Lorenzo Martin, publisher of the Chicago Standard newspapers, a chain of black-oriented weeklies that circulate in the southern suburbs. “When you look and see who is surrounding him, you are not going to see too many brothers. What you see is the liberal left.”

It will be funny but also a little heart-rending to see the fallout once this is fully understood and truly egalitarian liberals realize to their horror that empowering minorities who are “really just like the rest of us” isn’t enough and that the true test of one’s political virtue is willingness to submit to minorities who ARE different, and even somewhat hostile to you.

Excellent analysis. I would just add this. Because of the racial facts of life and the inherent psychology of egalitarianism, the dynamic you and I have described can only come to end, or never have taken place at all, in a society in which whites are acknowledged as the dominant group, for example in the pre-1960s America which was implicitly or explicitly understood by everyone to be basically a “white man’s country.” In a multiracial society in which liberal equality is the ruling idea, the anti-white dynamic will NEVER end.

German prosecutors in Mannheim demanded a five- year jail sentence Friday for one of the most high- profile figures in the Holocaust denial movement, Ernst Zündel, in closing arguments at his trial. Zündel, a 67-year-old German citizen, stands accused of inciting racial hatred for disputing the historical fact that Nazi Germany systematically slaughtered six million European Jews during World War II. German authorities say Zündel operated a website from Canada on which he expressed anti-Semitic and neo- Nazi views and presented “revisionist” history. He left Germany for Canada at the age of 19 but was deported in March 2005 on a German arrest warrant.
