Thought du Jour
January 31, 2007 on 8:13 pm | Friedrich Braun | General | | Email This Post | Print this PostJames Boswell in his London Diaries, encounters a very old aristocrat and asks him whether, looking back on life, he can discern any pattern or purpose to it. No, says the old boy, it has all been “a chaos of nothing.” Although I’m only in my mid thirties I feel pretty much the same way; and I doubt that in another thirty years I’ll feel any different. I’ve changed schools, jobs, girlfriends, lived in several countries, etc. But looking back on it, I’m surprised at the utter inconsequence, irrelevance of it all. No, the old man’s sentiment doesn’t shock me….Rather, what surprises me is that not everyone feels life’s total futility.
