Are Germans finally waking up?

This was in today’s New York Times.

Crimes by right-wing extremists grew by 14 percent last year, and attacks on foreigners rose by 37 percent, the Interior Ministry said. More than 18,000 right-wing hate crimes were registered in Germany last year, up from 15,900 in 2005. Of those, 511 were defined as violent attacks on foreigners and immigrants, up from 373. The total number of politically motivated crimes, which also includes crimes by leftist groups, rose by about 10 percent, to 29,050 cases. Interior Minister Wolfgang Schauble said that increase was a cause for worry.

It is interesting to note that fewer than 3% of these “right-wing hate crimes” involved any violence against anyone. The bulk were merely expressions of opinion. One also wonders why no act of violence by immigrants and foreigners against Germans in their own country is ever classified as a “hate crime.”
