The Russian Conundrum: Growing Economy, Failing Society

THE TVER REGION, which lies two hundred kilometers to the north of Moscow in the direction of St. Petersburg, was the capital of a powerful medieval state. In 1246, Alexander Nevsky entrusted it to his brother Yaroslav Yaroslavich, and very soon this dynasty transformed an inhospitable and uncultivated land into one of Russia’s wealthiest and most populous states. The ensuing two-hundred-year battle for supremacy between Tver and Moscow is a much-visited historical subject.

The Lying Tenet

In a week dominated by the CIA – the Agency of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s – it might be easy enough to forget the Agency of the new century, the one known for creating its own offshore Bermuda triangle of injustice, including a global system of secret (or borrowed) prisons, as well as for kidnappings, ghost prisoners, torture, assassination, covert programs aimed at “regime change” in countries like (as in 1953) Iran, and, of course, everything we don’t yet know because the “family jewels” for this period are nowhere near being released. Note, by the way, that even the recently released “family jewels” from that older era are not complete and remain heavily redacted – in the case of one document (scroll down), far more so than in a version that was released in the 1970s.

The Great Weasel Speaks

A few years ago at an immigration conference, Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel said simply and powerfully, “No human being is illegal.”

While no human being is ‘illegal’, their actions can be which is why we have laws and police and judges and jails. Human beings who ACT illegally are subject to the consequences of the law. Without laws, we are savages.

“We have our Jewish community mandate to welcome the stranger, consisting of 36 references in the Torah — not only to welcome, but to love the stranger,” Aronoff said. “To be sure, the Torah is not an immigration law manual and you do not have to be in favor of open borders to be a good Jew. Yet our heritage means that when we think as a community about a complex public policy question like immigration, we should have a thumb on the scale for the migrant.”

If God wants us to be nice to strangers, does it follow that God wants us to be overrun by strangers? I can see how being nice to individuals would be mandated by God but does this mean that God sancations invasions?

If you want to live by God’s words, sponsor an individual or a family. I can’t believe God is telling governments to allow themselves to be overrun.

“Today, when we hear slogans like “What part of illegal don’t you understand?” or “Why don’t they go wait in line?” we should remember that when there were visa lines for Jews from Germany and Austria with rise of Hitler, it led to tragic consequences for the Jewish community.”

In other words, anyone who doesn’t want their community or nation overwhelmed by foreigners is a Nazi. Can these people turn any idea into Nazi ideology or what?
