Churchill’s Colossal Blunders
Patrick J. Buchanan
http://buchanan. org/blog/ ?p=997
… In “Churchill, Hitler and `The Unnecessary War’: How Britain Lost Its Empire and the West Lost the World,” published today, this writer will argue that it was colossal blunders of British statesmen, Winston Churchill foremost among them, that turned two European wars into world wars that may yet prove the mortal wounds of the West … While excoriating Chamberlain for appeasing Hitler, Churchill’s own appeasement of Stalin lasted longer and was even more egregious and costly, ensuring that the causes for which Britain sacrificed the empire … were lost.
Paris During Nazi Occupation Was `One Big Romp’
The Sunday Times (Britain)
http://www.timesonl ine.co.uk/ tol/news/ world/europe/ article3998943. ece
A new book which suggests that the German occupation of France encouraged the sexual liberation of women has shocked a country still struggling to come to terms with its troubled history of collaboration with the Nazis. Like a recent photographic exhibition showing Parisians enjoying themselves under the occupation, the book’s depiction of life in Paris as one big party is at odds with the collective memory of hunger, resistance and fear. “It is a taboo subject, a story nobody wants to hear,” said Patrick Buisson, author of 1940-1945 Années Erotiques (”erotic years”).
Former White House Official McClellan Whacks Bush in New Memoir
Yahoo News
http://news. yahoo.com/ s/politico/ 10649
Former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan writes in a surprisingly scathing memoir to be published next week that President Bush “veered terribly off course,” was not “open and forthright on Iraq,” and took a “permanent campaign approach” to governing at the expense of candor and competence. Among the most explosive revelations in the 341-page book, titled “What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington’s Culture of Deception.” McClellan charges that Bush relied on “propaganda” to sell the war.

Ex-US President Jimmy Carter has said Israel has at least 150 atomic weapons in its arsenal. The Israelis have never confirmed they have nuclear weapons, but this has been widely assumed since a scientist leaked details in the 1980s. Mr Carter made his comments on Israel’s weapons at a press conference at the annual literary Hay Festival in Wales. He also described Israeli treatment of Palestinians as “one of the greatest human rights crimes on earth”.

Glenn Greenwald - Salon
http://www.salon. com/opinion/ greenwald/ 2008/05/27/ finkelstein/
On Friday, Israeli security forces, Shin Bet, detained Norman Finkelstein when he tried to enter Israel, kept him in an airport holding cell for 24 hours, ordered him deported from the country, and then imposed a ten-year ban on his entry. Finkelstein, the son of a Holocaust survivor, is a Jewish-American author and academic who has frequently criticized the Israeli government and provoked extreme animosity among right-wing factions in the U.S. He had flown to Israel 15 times previously without incident and was never charged with, let alone convicted of, any crime.

Britain and other European governments should break from the US over the international embargo on Gaza, former US president Jimmy Carter told the Guardian yesterday. Carter, visiting the Welsh border town of Hay for the Guardian literary festival, described the EU’s position on the Israeli-Palestinian dispute as “supine” and its failure to criticise the Israeli blockade of Gaza as “embarrassing” .

German Postal Service Admits Printing Hess Stamp
BBC News

German neo-Nazis have used a personalised stamp service to send letters bearing the image of Hitler’s deputy Rudolf Hess. Deutsche Post spokesman Dirk Klasen confirmed that an order of 20 55-cent stamps had been printed by the service … Rudolf Hess died in 1987, aged 93, after more than four decades in prison. Deutsche Post’s personalised stamp service was launched in February and allows customers to upload their own photos over the internet to create an individual stamp design, ordering any amount from 20 to 10,000.
Where Are Those Iranian Weapons in Iraq?
Gareth Porter - Inter Press Service
http://www.ipsnews. net/news. asp?idnews= 42448
The U.S. military command in Iraq continues to talk about an alleged pipeline of Iranian weapons to Iraqi Shiites opposing the U.S. occupation, implying that they have become dependent on Iran for indirect-fire weapons and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). But U.S. officials have failed thus far to provide evidence that would support that claim, and a long-delayed U.S. military report on Iranian arms is unlikely to offer any data on what proportion of the weapons in the hands of Shiite fighters are from Iran and what proportion comes from purchases on the open market.
