Steve Colbert interviewed Georgia Rep. Lynn Westmoreland on “The Colbert Report.” Westmoreland co-sponsored a bill that would require the display of the Ten Commandments in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, but, when asked, couldn’t actually list the commandments.
This stuff would be funny if it weren’t so dangerous.
In the 2004 election, nearly 70 percent of Bush supporters believed the United States had “clear evidence” that Saddam Hussein was working closely with al Qaeda; a third believed weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq; and more than a third that a substantial majority of world opinion supported the U.S.-led invasion, according to the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland. The political right and allied culture warriors actively ignore evidence and encourage misinformation. To motivate their followers, they label intelligent and informed as “elite,” implying that ignorance is somehow both valuable and under attack. Susan Jacoby confronts our “know-nothingism” — current and historical — in her new book, The Age of American Unreason.
Calvin had taken a city wracked with dissension and molded it into a power far out of proportion to its economic importance. The same can be said for an offshoot of Calvinism, the Puritans of England and later the United States. Puritans wished to ‘purity’ the established Church of England from any remnants of the Catholic Church. Puritanism originated in East Anglia in England, spread to New England, and became the most important cultural influence in the United States beginning in the 18th century down to the mid-20th century. East Anglian Puritans “became the breeding stock for Americas Yankee population” and “multiplied at a rapid rate, doubling every generation for two centuries. Their numbers increased to 100,000 by 1700, to at least one million by 1800, six million by 1900, and more than sixteen million by 1988—all descended from 21,000 English emigrants who came to Massachusetts in the period from 1629 to 1640″ (Fischer 1989,17).

[Okay, I view this article as suggestive but not conclusive. Show me a successful Establishment politician whose staff and career is NOT riddled with Jews? He would need them, if only for camouflage, to blend in. GREELEY, Colo. - Authorities in Colorado say a dog stood guard over its owner’s body for up to six weeks after the man committed suicide on a remote plain.
The body of 25-year-old Jake Baysinger of La Salle was found Sunday on the Pawnee National Grasslands, about 120 kilometres northeast of Denver.
Cash, his German shepherd, was found beside him, thin and dehydrated but still alive.
Officials say the dog apparently survived by eating mice and rabbits.
The Weld County coroner ruled Baysinger’s death a suicide.
The cause of death wasn’t immediately determined but authorities found a gun nearby.
Baysinger was reported missing June 28. An extensive search failed to locate him, but a rancher saw Cash last weekend, went to investigate and discovered Baysinger’s body and his pickup truck.
“At least we know it’s over now,” said Baysinger’s wife, Sara. “We’d been looking for my husband for six weeks, and this isn’t how we wanted it to end. At least we can close this.”
Cash has been reunited with her and her two-year-old son, Lane. She said her little boy is “very close to that dog” and happy to see her again.
Investigators said the dog probably kept coyotes away from the body.

I’m currently reading an issue of Free Inquiry (April/May 2008) Vol. 28 No.3. at 42 and I came upon a passage that neatly encapsulates why unbridled capitalism is a bad economic system that often works against people and why libertarians and other market-worshippers are totally out to lunch. It’s a beautiful illustration of how the “invisible hand” is giving the average tax-payer the finger.

In early tests, it showed the promise of sweeping clogged arteries free of plaque after a small number of treatments, thereby reversing or even curing cardiovascular disease. This posed a threat to manufacturers of cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, which are of course much more profitable than the new technique would have been, since statin drugs must be taken indefinitely. A manufacturer of one of the primary statin drugs purchased the small biotech company for twice its then-current value, and the new technique has “disappeared.”
