The bellicosity was missing, but the spirit of Col. Nathan Jessup was alive and well at last week’s Senate Armed Services Committee’ hearing. The purpose of the hearing was to determine the origin of policies which legitimized the torture of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Torture at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba? Yeah, Jessup was definitely there. The hearing was spurred by revelations of previously classified documents which confirmed that the torture of those imprisoned by the military was not the spontaneous act of a few demented junior enlistees. The paper trail led all the way back to the White House, and the resulting program of abuse and torture led retired General Antonio Taguba, who investigated similar abuses at Abu Ghraib to conclude that the Bush Administration had engaged in “a systematic regime of torture.”

Kit Bond — to vest the President with vast new warrantless eavesdropping powers and to vest lawbreaking telecoms with amnesty. Even as his office dishonestly denies that he is doing so, still more reports yesterday — this one from the NYT and this one from Roll Call (sub req’d) — confirm that a so-called “compromise” is being spearheaded by Hoyer and the House Democratic leadership. The ACLU and EFF are holding a joint call tomorrow to denounce Hoyer’s “compromise” as nothing more than disguised guaranteed immunity for telecoms and, further, because “the proposed deal could be used to authorize dragnet surveillance of Americans’ communications in violation of the Fourth Amendment.”

‘100 years to recover from Bush’

Madrid - It will take the United States a century to recover from the damage wreaked by President George. W Bush, US writer Gore Vidal said in an interview published on Saturday.

“The president behaved like a virtual criminal but we didn’t have the courage to sack him for fear of violating the American constitution,” Vidal told the El Mundo newspaper.

The author, a trenchant critic of the US-led invasion of Iraq, said it would take the United States “100 years to repair the damage” caused by Bush.

“We live in a dictatorship. We have a fascist government …which controls the media,” he said.

Vidal also said presidential aspirant Barack Obama was “intelligent” adding that it would be a “novelty” to have an “intelligent” person in the White House.
