You claim that National Socialism “established itself through terror”, that is, a small number of fanatics took over Germany and kept themselves in power through fear until their defeat in 1945. It’s the well-known argument according to which: “Nazism’s first victim was the German people”. Let’s say so, just to start. But then, how do you account for the re-education of the whole German people that’s been going on since 1945? How do you explain the “cleansing” of the libraries, the suppression of the independent press and the preparation of new schoolbooks by the “liberators”? One would not re-educate a people at long last freed from the worst dictatorship the world had ever seen; they would have no need of it: with shouts of glee, all on their own, they’d consign to the flames everything that might recall the dark times.
It’s always the same: you and your friends will say anything and everything depending on the circumstances. If Jean-Marie Le Pen makes it to the second round of the French presidential elections, you’ll cry out in alarm: “Beware, Hitler came into power democratically!”. But, at the same time, you’ve been taught that National Socialism imposed itself thanks to a small minority who brought on and maintained a reign of terror. In order to mask this contradiction, you say: “Hitler came into power democratically by concealing his real objectives, or because he hadn’t been taken seriously”.
But still at the same time, you claim everything had been stated in Mein Kampf and that the book had become the Nazis’ bible.

As a National Socialist you constantly experience the difficulty in carrying on a meaningful conversation with a Non-National Socialist. You often feel that such a dialogue is outright impossible and that you live in two totally different worlds. Partly, of course, the reason for this deplorable situation lies in the propaganda image of National Socialism as the culmination of human viciousness that our enemies have created in the public mind. However, to young people what happened half a century ago is not all that important any more. From their earliest childhood they have been able to follow all the malice and cruelty that has been ravaging the world since the “victory of humanism” in 1945, vividly presented through television, and there is a very encouraging tendency among the young generation to have a less biased attitude to life and its various problems than the previous generation had.
However, this does not mean that young people have any idea at all what National Socialism is really all about, nor that they show much comprehension when you tell them. They have grown up in a world where they have been deliberately alienated from all natural values and natural ethical norms and taught that everything is relative, and where the borderline between truth and lie has ceased to exist, as there are no absolutes and everything depends on the way you choose to look at it. In this value-free world people live in a mental vacuum, totally out of contact with the real world, its relentless biological laws, and absolute moral and social obligations, and it is unavoidable that the National Socialist idea is felt as an incomprehensible alien element in such a political and philosophical universe.

My Dear German Women and Girls !
When Germans come together today to discuss the things that concern us both as individuals and as a nation, it is a solemn occasion, whether we wish it to be or not. During the political struggles of the past, we could speak of party programs or of civilization without any involvement of our soul.
Now we have forgotten how to approach an issue merely with our understanding, merely with our mouth, merely with our heart. We have become whole people once again. When we speak with others, we do so with our full being.
That is what made the movement strong, and great, and powerful from its first days. It is also that which the enemy on this side of the border and the other cannot understand, and which it hates with deadly strength. As this great and beautiful people’s movement began, so too began a hard and bitter struggle between enemy and German forces, between an old world that is really long dead and buried, and the new world that is struggling to reach the light through us. This struggle has been going on in people’s hearts and souls for years, and is nowhere near its end. The world finds it difficult to understand that which is at the center of our endeavors : The value of blood and race.

Linz is to be Europe’s Capital of Culture in 2009. Before the Austrian city takes on that mantle it is showing an exhibition about how Hitler had wanted to make Linz a “Culture Capital for the Führer.”
The idea of Linz as a “cultural capital” is far from new. Adolf Hitler wanted the city where he had spent nine years of his childhood to become one of the five “Führer Cities” of the Third Reich. Along with Berlin, the Reich’s capital; Munich, the capital of the Nazi movement; Hamburg, “The Gateway to the World”; and Nuremburg, “The City of Party Congresses,” Linz was scheduled for refurbishment as the “City of the Führer’s Youth” — completing a series of ideological centers upon which the Nazi regime was based.

”Everything is discussed openly in Germany, and every German claims the right to have an opinion on any and all questions. One is Catholic, the other Protestant, one an employee, the other an employer, a capitalist, a socialist, a democrat, an aristocrat. There is nothing dishonorable about choosing one side or the other of a question. Discussions happen in public, and where matters are unclear or confused one settles it by argument and counter argument. But there is one problem that is not discussed publicly, one that it is delicate even to mention: the Jewish question. It is taboo in our republic.
The Jew is immunized against all dangers: one may call him a scoundrel, parasite, swindler, profiteer, it all runs off him like water off a raincoat. But call him a Jew and you will be astonished at how he recoils, how injured he is, how he suddenly shrinks back: “I’ve been found out.” One cannot defend himself against the Jew. My grandfather was in the Wehrmacht and was killed on the Russian front. He’s my ideal.
The crusade against Bolshevism, codenamed Operation Barbarossa, was to be launched sooner rather than later. It was planned to unite Western Europe behind Third Reich’s leadership for the common goal to fight Communism.
The German campaigns in Greece and North Africa delayed the planned invasion by several weeks, and a great deal of the good summer weather was already lost by the time the invasion was launched on June 22, 1941. The massive attack still turned out to be an initial success, conquering whole areas of the Soviet Union’s western region. Their only significant strategic failure was the advance on Moscow, which was halted by stiff resistance, and subsequently driven back by a Russian counter-attack. The following years, however, were less successful on the Eastern Front mainly because of the fact that the Wehrmacht had no winter clothing and was fighting a three war front. Even though for some this war is considered a failure for the Wehrmacht, for many it shows the bravery and honor shown by these soldiers who defended their homeland to the last step even in the greatest disadvantages. They stood up to the world and fought.

The German American Bund was a fraternal American organization established in the 1930s. At the height of the power, membership estimates 50,000.
With the start of the World War II the Bund’s members were placed in internment camps.
Michael Kloft’s documentary on the history of Nazi television. Legend has it that the triumphal march of television began in the United States in the ‘fifties. But in reality its origins hark back much further. As early as the ‘thirties, a bitter rivalry raged for the world’s first television broadcast. Nazi Germany wanted to beat the competition from Great Britain and the U.S. - at all costs. Reich Broadcast Director Hadamovsky christened the new-born “Greater German Television” in March 1935. And it was only in September 1944 that the last program flickered across the TV screens. For a long time the belief persisted that only very few Nazi programs had survived, but SPIEGEL TV has now succeeded in tracking down a stock of television films and reports which have remained intact since the end of the Third Reich. These include extensive coverage of the 1936 National Socialist Party Convention in Nuremberg which recalls today’s live broadcasts, and of a 1937 visit Benito Mussolini paid to Berlin. Interviews with high-ranking Nazis such as Albert Speer, Robert Ley and the actor Heinrich George are among the finds, along with numerous special reports (i.e. on the Reich Labor Service), a cooking show and the lottery drawing.
Television anchorwomen greet their tiny audiences in specially installed television parlors in Berlin, Munich and Hamburg with “Heil Hitler.” The entertainment programs are particularly curious. Cabaret artists are featured - alongside singers extolling the virtues of the “brown columns of the SA and SS.” This documentary by Michael Kloft will reveal a rare and intriguing view of the Third Reich, one far removed from the propagandistic presentations of Leni Riefenstahl & Co. and the weekly cinema newsreel, yet no less ideologically slanted. This is Nazi Germany expressed in an aesthetic medium that we ourselves have only really known since the ‘fifties.

The huge success of the first national rally of the Hitler Youth held in Potsdam, on October 2 and 3, 1932, was not only a personal triumph for Baldur von Schirach but also a clarion call to arms for the movement and the party. Whereas the paid membership of the Hitlergugend1 had only been 20,000 in the beginning of the year, at Potsdam 100,000 youngsters swarmed over the heath outside this ancient Prussian city, transforming it into beehive of juvenile enthusiasm. Scores of workers from the SS and the SA had worked for hours preparing the grounds, erecting tents, and constructing a speaker’s platform and setting up a post office.2 Schirach and Karl Nabersberg, his assistant, worked hard to make this conclave an historic event in the National Socialist drive for power. A year later the Reichsjugendführer said: The press may write what it will concerning this day, it is nevertheless certain that National Socialism proved on October 2-3, 1932 that the Weimar government may have had the bayonets, but we had the youth.3

In the late 1930s, [Adof Hitler] ordered the RuSHA to compose new and more stringent criteria for SS candidates. SS Hauptsturmfuehrer (Captain) Professor Bruno K. Schultz, a physical anthropologist, transmitted a set of criteria to the RuSHA Racial Commission, before which all prospective SS members had to appear for their final examinations.
Schultz divided his criteria into three parts: racial phenotype, physical condition, and “general bearing.” He aimed his set of values to favor the Nordic type. He listed five racial groupings: “pure Nordic,” “predominantly Nordic or Falic” [Falic = Brunn], “harmonious bastard [cross-breed] with slight Alpine, Dinaric or Mediterranean characteristics,” “bastards of predominantly East Baltic or Alpine origin,” and “bastards of extra-European origin.” Only those in the first three categories were eligible to join the SS.
Schultz also composed a list of nine categories of physical proportion as a guide for the physical examination of SS candidates. Candidates achieving ratings of 6-9 were passed; categories 4 and 5 were only passed after proving “Nordic qualities” in their behavior; while ratings 1-3 were failed. Himmler was adamant that his men be “of well-proportioned build; for instance there must be no disproportion between the lower leg and the thigh or between the legs and the body; otherwise an exceptional bodily effort is required to carry out long marches”. As to “Nordic bearing,” Himmler put it this way: “The point is that in his attitude to discipline the man should not behave like an underling, that his gait, his hands, everything, should correspond to the ideal which we set ourselves”.
No mention was made of intellectual or educational attainments. As Knoebel states: “No moral and intellectual achievement was refined to qualify as a Herrenmensch [a man born to be master].” explains why this had to be the case:
“Certainly the SS never could have been developed along educational or social lines. The only criterion which could serve as a uniting bond was to establish the new elite along the lines of racial selection. This would make the Schutzstaffel [SS] attractive to ambitious upstarts as well as promise continued membership in the new elite to upper bourgeoisie and especially the nobility.”
Alcoholics were rejected or expelled, as Knoebel makes clear: “Others, who qualified superbly according to the racial charts by the commission, were dismissed because they were found incapable of controlling their consumption of alcohol.” On December 31, 1931 Himmler issued a marriage law for SS men which stated that they could marry “solely if the necessary conditions of race and healthy stock were fulfilled” and only after approval by him or by RuSHA. The SS man and his fiancee had to fill out a RuSHA questionnaire, take a comprehensive physical examination administered by an SS doctor, provide photographs of themselves in bathing suits taken from three angles, and submit proof of Aryan ancestry back to 1800 (for officers, back to 1750). (The term “Aryan” as used in National Socialist laws and regulations denoted a person of non-Jewish European origin.) RuSHA would determine if both prospective spouses deserved to be entered into the SS clan book; in the case of SS leaders, Himmler would make the decision personally. To quote this order:
1. The SS is a formation of German men in the Nordic mold .
2. In keeping with National Socialist ideology and cognizant that our national future depends upon the selection and preservation of racially and hereditarily good stock, I am introducing a “marriage permit” for all single members of the SS.
3. The intended aim is (to produce) a valuable clan of German stock in the Nordic mound.
4. The marriage permit will be granted or refused solely on grounds of race and hereditary health.
5. Every SS man who intends to marry must obtain a marriage permit from the Reichsfuehrer-SS.
6. SS members who marry notwithstanding the refusal of a marriage permit will be expelled from the SS.
7. The relevant processing of marriage applications will be the task of the Racial Bureau of the SS.
8. The Racial Bureau of the SS will keep the “Clan Book of the SS,” in which the families of SS members will be entered after a marriage permit has been issued or a request for registration granted.
Jochen van Lang has reproduced the actual SS medical examination form as it stood in late 1939. It was designed to be employed for both male and female applicants. The examination was divided into five sections: “Permission for Disclosure,” “Past History of Family,” “Past Medical Treatment,” “Personal History,” and “General Findings of Examination.” Under “Past History of Family,” the only category of interest here is “precise data on chronic diseases, i.e., endocrine disturbances, allergies, alcoholism.” Family members included children, parents, siblings, children of siblings, and grandparents. Under “Personal History,” there was a question about “Mental development (schooling, career training, delinquency if any),” on which the candidate had only to secure a rating of “normal” (average), and two questions on “Character development” and “Noteworthy special giftedness.”
Section 5 was the most detailed and significant. It included a whole series of anthropometric and somatotypic measurements, as well as points on “Bearing and stride,” coloration of skin and eyes, coloration and texture of hair, and presence or absence of the Mongolian fold (inner epicanthic eyefold). The racial diagnosis followed, and then a long list of meticulous medical determinations. For women, the listing “Capability to bear children” appeared, and for men “Reproductive capability.” The nebulous listing “Degree of talent” followed, but could be passed simply by a rating of “normal.” Next followed the question, “Does the subject of the examination make a credible and frank impression?” Finally, the form requested a “Summary judgment on suitability for marriage,” and four questions were asked: “Total impression”; “Is perpetuation in racial/national sense desirable?”; “Are any conditions present that would affect medical opinion to contraindicate advisability of entering into a pregnancy?”; and “Is the subject now pregnant?” The rest of the form largely contained standard medical questions, although in greater number, detail, and specificity than one would normally expect.
